Why recycle?
We all know that the huge quantity of waste we produce is harming our planet and that our extensive use of landfill sites is no longer a viable option. Electrical and Electronic waste (WEEE) is the fastest growing form of waste in the EU today, producing around 9 million tonnes in 2005 and this figure is expected to rise to 12.3 million tonnes by 2020.
The WEEE Directive has brought about massive improvements in the way that this waste is disposed of with less and less going to landfill and more being treated to ensure less environmental harm and health problems.
In fact the Irish nation have embraced the Directive so much so that in 2008 we collected over 9.5kg of electrical waste per person - more than double the EU target of 4kg per person!
In September 2008, the Waste Batteries Directive was launched which stipulated that the pubic can recycle their waste batteries free of charge, at retail outlets selling equivalent batteries, or other authorised collection points, even where the person depositing the waste batteries doesn't purchase a new battery.
The equivalent in weight of 80 million AA batteries are sold in Ireland every year with the majority of these ending up in landfill.
It is vital we continue to play our part in disposing of our electrical waste and waste batteries in an environmentally conscious way and it is getting increasingly easier.
