Where can I recycle?
Consumers have three options:
- Your local retailer
- For electrical and electronic waste - When consumers buy a new electrical product such as a washing machine or fridge the retailer is obliged to take-back the consumer’s old appliance on a like for like basis. The guidelines for this are:
- Consumers can bring their old product to their retailer within 15 days of purchasing their new product
- Retailers are obliged to collect the old product within 15 days of delivering the new – provided that it is disconnected from the mains, is not a health and safety risk and is readily available for collection – if not, the consumer can take the product to their retailer themselves within 30 days. (Retailers must give 24 hours notice prior to WEEE collection.)
- For waste batteries
- Waste battery bins are available to deposit old batteries in wherever similar batteries are sold
- This service is free of charge provided the batteries are equivalent to those that can be bought from that retailer and the consumer does not have to make a purchase to use the service
- A limit of 5kg per consumer per visit can be made by the retailer and the retailer can also refuse any leaking batteries

- Your local recycling centre
- Consumers can bring their unwanted electrical and electronic equipment or waste batteries to their local civic amenity centres for recycling free of charge.
