Waste Battery Compliance
In September 2008, Ireland implemented the EU Waste Battery Directive which compels manufacturers and retailers of batteries to provide a system for the collection and recycling of spent batteries. Under the directive, any retail outlet that sells batteries is required to take-back waste batteries, similar in type to those they supply.
Ireland was one of the first four countries in Europe, along with Spain, Finland and Austria, to implement this directive. ERP Ireland provides a compliance scheme for all portable, automotive and industrial batteries in response to the directive.
ERP Ireland's Waste Battery Model
ERP Ireland operates a collect and recycle operation for waste batteries. We have established over 3,500 designated collection points throughout Ireland.
-
For retailers: in our catchment area, we establish collection points “free of charge” and service these by collecting at regular intervals. Once collected, the waste batteries are segregated into various groups (portable, automotive and industrial) and treated and recycled. The scope and breadth of this service has been aligned with the learnings of ERP across Europe where ERP operates similar Waste Battery compliance schemes with producers and retailers.
• On behalf of its members ERP holds battery chemistry compliance data which it updates and maintains. ERP is committed to helping its members meet the targets set by the Waste Battery Directive. ERP’s innovative waste management strategies will enable producers reach the target of recycling 25% of all batteries put on the market by 2012 and 45% by 2016 as set by the EU.
If your battery bin needs to be collected please contact us on 0818 332 757 or by email at info@erpbatteryrecycle.org for more information>>

For producers: all battery producers must meet the following obligations:
- Chemical requirements e.g. The directive prohibits excess levels of mercury, lead and cadmium from batteries placed on the market
- Marketing requirements e.g. changes on labelling must signify contents & recycling labelling
- Collection & treatment obligations e.g. producers must collect 25% of what they place on the market by 2012 and 45% by 2016. For more information>>
- For consumers: waste batteries can be left free of charge for recycling at over 3,500 ERP designated collection points in Ireland, including retail outlets selling equivalent batteries, or other authorised collection. For more information on recycling>>
- For schools: ERP is in the process of distributing battery collection boxes to all schools in our catchment areas. We also launched an exciting campaign to schools to encourage students to recycle. For more information on the ERP Schools competition>>
